Face mask sewing pattern

Snapseed.jpg

Supplies needed:

  • Fabric, I recommend a cotton, linen, or seersucker fabric. You don’t want to choose fabric that is too thin or your mask won’t offer any protection from the virus.

  • 12-14” of elastic, I have been using 3mm craft elastic but any will work.

  • 1 nose bridge piece or a 3-4” piece of small gauge wire

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Scissors & pinking shears

The Pattern Piece(s)

I have pattern pieces sized for 2 different masks. The medium is a standard adult woman size and the large fits an adult man. Pattern pieces can be downloaded here: Medium mask pattern and the Large mask pattern.

Print at 100% with no resizing.

Instructions

Cut 4 pieces of whichever size mask you are making.

See figure A: Place 2 of your cut pieces with fronts together & pin the curve. Repeat with your remaining 2 pieces. Sew the curve of each pair with a 3/8” seam allowance. Trim curve with shears or by hand.

See figure B: Pin & sew side darts on each of your sides – 4 in total.

See figure C:
Pin fronts together & sew top & bottom seams. Leave a hole in the bottom seam for turning.

If you’re making a medium mask, cut 2 - 6” pieces of elastic. If you’re making a the large size, cut 2 - 7” pieces of elastic.

See figure D: Insert one of your elastic strips in-between your 2 pieces of fabric. Line one end of your elastic up just below the top seam and the other end just above the bottom seam. Allow the elastic to form a half circle that is the filling of your fabric sandwich. Repeat with your other piece of elastic on the other side.

Turn your mask right-side out, through the hole you left in the bottom seam. Shape and pin, if needed.

See figure E: Now we make a pocket for the nose bridge piece to be secured inside. Starting on the opposite side from where your hole is in your bottom seam, sew down from the top of the mask and then along the nose slope. Insert your nose piece (or wire) through your the bottom hole and into the pocket you have created. Stitch pocket closed.

See figure F: Topstitch from top corner to the beginning of pocket. Repeat on the other side.

Top stitch bottom seam of mask.

Ta-da! You’re done!
